From SoftPear
AboutThe SoftPear Project aims to create compatibility software between the IBM PC and the Apple Macintosh architecture. With Mac OS X, an excellent operating system is available, unfortunately it runs only on Macintosh hardware. Therefore this project seeks to create compatibility layers to run Mac OS X and Mac OS X Software on IBM PC hardware. We do not develop an emulator for PowerPC Macintosh machines (like "PearPC", or like "Basilisk" or "UAE" for other platforms) and we do not help you in running pirated versions of Mac OS X on your PC! Instead, the project has more similarities to Digital's "FX!32", FreeBSD's "Linux Binary Compatbility" and "WINE". The SoftPear project is an open project. Everybody should feel invited to contribute and there is no strict development roadmap to follow. Instead, we try to achieve the project goals by evaluating a varitey of different approaches. The SoftPear project streamlines the different development efforts and offers a platform for information sharing between the developers. StatusWe just started a new approach. The basic idea is to extend the FreeBSD kernel with the ability to load Mach-O binary files. Expect more information, soon... Information on our approach of a user mode emulator / dynamic recompiling binary translator can be found, here. 16 March 2006: SoftPear is waking up, again. Mach-O binary support for FreeBSD is on its way. Expect more news, soon. 4 August 2005: We have published a Review of the Project's Goals. Feel free to submit your comments to the Mailing List (mailto:softpear-devel@lists.sourceforge.net). 6 June 2005: Because of the new direction Apple is going we are currently discussing a new goal for our project. Expect more news soon... (Transitive has been faster - congratulations!) |
